The Teaching Team

Liz Manison   Liz Manison

Liz is based in Bristol, Gloucester and Birmingham, with a thriving holistic therapy practice. She teaches Crystal Therapy at a variety of locations including Gloucester College of Arts and Technology, and Hawkwood College, and has a Postgraduate Certificate of Education.

Her main interests are Crystal Therapy, Energy Healing and Release, Tarot and Spiritual Development, and she works with the 3 fundamental healing principles of Intention, Permission and Intuition.

Liz takes a common sense approach to healing and holistic therapies, and, having learnt through experience that appropriate boundaries and grounding are essential, these form an important part of her practice.

Justine Thornton   Justine Thornton

Justine is a fully qualified and practising complementary therapist and trainer. She originally trained and worked in the IT industry as an Analyst Programmer, however she was drawn to working in the field of complementary therapies having experienced the benefits for herself.

Justine specialises in reflexology, meridian therapies and massage, although this is only a small part of her training.

Eileen Gilmour   Eileen Gilmour

Eileen Gilmour trained initially as a drama teacher. Her early career was spent teaching in primary and middle schools all over the country.

The turning point came when she enrolled on a one-day aromatherapy workshop and became hooked on all things holistic. She re-trained as a therapist over a number of years, then gave up teaching and worked initially in a natural therapy centre before starting her own practice.

Since 1994 Eileen has lectured in holistic therapies at local colleges. She is an accredited tutor with the Association of Reflexologists, and also runs courses in Aromatherapy, Swedish Massage, Indian Head Massage and Anatomy and Physiology.

She lives in a cottage in Herefordshire and is currently setting up a rural reflexology practice, and plans to offer taster courses in the more remote parts of the county.

Eileen also works as a writer, and particularly enjoys writing short fiction for magazines.

Wendy Smith   Wendy Smith

I am a Beauty Therapist, Aromatherapist and Reflexologist.

After having been a school teacher for twenty seven years, I trained in Beauty and Complementary Therapies. When I qualified, I felt it was important for me to experience being a therapist in a Spa setting, as ultimately my aim was to run my own Beauty and Complementary Therapy practice. So I spent some time working at a spa and at a leisure centre, where I developed my own ideas on how I could make treatments my own, in my own business.

Over the past three years, I have built a very successful practice, working from my own home, in a purpose built suite.  I offer a full range of Beauty Therapies, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, a variety of massage therapies including Swedish massage, Thai massage, Stone Therapy and Indian Head Massage.

In my treatments, I am passionate about providing  quality holistic care, always listening carefully and giving time to the needs of my clients. I  specialise in Aromatherapy, massage, skincare and make up.

As a tutor, my aim is to guide students through the learning processes, whilst keeping awareness of the holistic approach to therapies, as real beauty is more than just skin deep.

Keith Ward   Keith Ward

Keith holds a Biomedical Science degree in Rehabilitation Studies and is qualified in Sports Therapy, Naturopathy and Acupuncture.  For over 12 years he has lectured at colleges in the Midlands, and in 2004, published “Hands-On Sports Therapy” [Thomson Learning], which has been described as “the most comprehensive sports therapy text”.  Keith is a member of the Society of Sports Therapists [MSST], Federation of Holistic Therapists [FHT] and the Council of Health, Fitness and Sports Therapists [MHFST].

Keith has taught the subjects of sports therapy at a range of colleges and has also delivered specific lectures to university undergraduates, as a guest lecturer, on such topics as applications of sports therapy rehabilitation and neuromuscular and muscle energy techniques. His current position is full-time sports massage lecturer for Premier Training International.

Keith also runs a busy part-time clinic in Brownhills, West Midlands, where his client-base ranges from elite athletes to the elderly disabled.

Jo Lunn   Jo Lunn

Jo runs a successful clinic in Worcestershire since 2000 and is now passing on her experience and expertise to potential practitioners throughout the UK with the European College of Bowen Studies. ECBS is the leading college of the Bowen Technique in Europe, is recognised by British Complementary Medicine Association, Bowen Therapists’ European Register, Complementary Therapists Association, Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists and British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology. It also has professional links with Federation of Holistic Therapists and College of Chiropractors.

Jo’s history is in stage management in the West End and in Scotland, in marketing and PR and as a gym instructor with the World Amateur Body Building Association where she was invited to become a WABBA Assessor. She has also studied law and taught reading and writing skills to adults with learning difficulties. When a back injury forced her to re-evaluate her life she initially trained in reflexology and sports massage and then as a Bowen practitioner following remarkably successful Bowen treatment for her chronic back problem. By this point Jo had been head hunted to open a fitness club but decided to open her own therapy clinic enabling her to develop a more holistic approach to treating people. She now treats clients with many different conditions from across the UK and continues to undertake related training both in the UK and overseas; most recently in South Africa at the Cape Town University Medical School.

Bowen is an accessible and efficient treatment and with the ever increasing recognition that the Technique has gained in our healthcare system Jo is confident that it will soon achieve the full acknowledgement it deserves. By passing on her knowledge and expertise to others she is contributing to the growth of this valuable, non-invasive therapy.

Taking the skills and experience Jo has developed in her clinic into the classroom has been a natural progression. Her courses take a friendly, hands-on, practical approach and her previous teaching experience enables her to fully support a range of student learning styles. Jo’s clear enthusiasm for Bowen and her down to earth philosophy gives students plenty of opportunity to ask questions and clarify procedures as well as supporting them as they develop confidence in their work.

Fran Perry   Fran Perry

Having worked all her adult life as a secretary/PA/manager (she refers to this as her ‘head work’) Fran embarked on her holistic journey in 2000 with a two-year training course as a Spiritual Healer.  Synchronicity stepped in and years of study and presented opportunities since then have resulted in Fran becoming a professional therapist in many specialities, owning a successful holistic and beauty salon, and offering training in Auricular Acupuncture, Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candling, and all levels of Reiki (this is what Fran refers to as her ‘heart work’).

Fran has worked with those suffering mental health difficulties such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, psychosis and schizophrenia for the past three years, together with carers in all walks of life.  She says that her clients, who have presented her with their innermost physical and emotional being and feelings, have taught her an immeasurable amount in the way of empathy, compassion and grace.

Fran joins Athena offering training in Auricular Acupuncture, which specifically aids the detoxification profess and emotional transition of those who wish to rid themselves of addictions to, for example, drugs and alcohol, in addition to those wishing to cut down and give up cigarettes.  Weight loss can also be helped and encouraged.  The treatment is beneficial for the stress that is attached to these life-changing events.
