Well Mother - Supporting the wisdom of parents and babies

This is a really comprehensive course, and aims to develop massage skills and holistic care in pregnancy, birth, and postnatally.

Massage tummyspacerMassage and touch are powerful tools in supporting women to contact the wisdom of their bodies in pregnancy and birth, and for parents to bond early with their developing child. Their full potential is only beginning to be explored. This course enables you to become familiar with their use both in practical ways and in understanding a different approach to pregnancy and birth that can enhance your practice.

There will be time to explore your own attitudes, as well as developing your touch sensitivity skills. You will learn to work in an holistic way, combining Eastern and Western philosophies and supporting your own personal growth.

The syllabus is detailed below, but briefly covers:

  • An in-depth understanding of techniques and positions for massage in pregnancy, birth and post-natally,
  • An understanding of the anatomy and pregnancy of pregnancy, particularly in relation to massage and exercise,
  • Working towards a holistic model of pregnancy and birth and the postpartum period,
  • Practical tools for self development.

There are 30 CPD points available, and the course is recognised by both Embody and the APNT (Association of Physical and Natural Therapist).

The Course

Massage ballspacerThe course was developed by Suzanne Yates in 1998, with the support of Julie Barclay (Association of Physical and Natural Therapists) and Gill Tree (Essentials for Health, London). Julie continues to be involved in the course and supervises the practical assessments and written course work. It is one of the most in-depth courses of its kind worldwide, and one of the few that requires a time of consolidation of skills through the post-course work.

Suzanne has taught in Canada, US and Australia where it is also recognized. Through the register, website and continuing education days, she aims to offer continuous support to therapists who have undertaken the course.

Quotes from participants:

Tutor: Suzanne Yates BA (Hons), DipHSEC, MRSS(T), APNT, PGCE. I began studying massage in 1982 and shiatsu in 1984, completing the three year professional training with Sonia Moriceau in 1988 and assisting her between 1989 and 1993. In 1990, I went to Boston, USA to train as an instructor in ante/post-natal exercise with Elizabeth Noble and established Well Mother to support the wisdom of women and their partners with shiatsu, massage, exercise, breathwork, relaxation and discussion. I ran several weekly classes in Bristol from 1990-2002 and continue to work with parents individually and in workshops. I served on the Avon Maternity Services Liaison Committee from 1995-2000 and am involved with research projects on the use of shiatsu. I run various courses for midwives, shiatsu practitioners and massage therapists in the UK and worldwide. My first book, Shiatsu for Midwives was published by Elsevier Science in August 2003. I am a registered Teacher and Practitioner with the Shiatsu Society and hold the APNT qualification in therapeutic massage. I lived what I teach during the pregnancies and births of my own children Rosa Lia (b 1990) and Bram Delaney (b 1995) and continue to grow with them.
