On this 2 day course we will study the fundamental principles of sports massage therapy and practice the most commonly used techniques. We will look at strategies for preparing athletes for action and for treating soft tissue injuries and postural conditions.
We aim to develop strong awareness of body tissues, anatomical structures, soft tissue healing mechanisms and post care advice.
DAY 1 -
SCHEME OF WORK
- Introductions to One and All
- Introduction to Sports Massage and its relationship with other professionals and practices.
- Practical: Clothed Pre-Event Sports Massage Approaches.
- Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Therapy:
- Key Positional and Directional Terms
- Key Therapy Terms
- Practical: Palpation of key bony prominences
- Practical: Effleurage and Petrissage – Lower body
- Video: Sample Techniques
- Practical: Effleurage and Petrissage – Upper body
- Stretching: Indications, safety and approaches
- Practical: Passive Stretching
DAY 2 -
SCHEME OF WORK
- Review: What we did on day 1; What we are doing today; What would you be doing on the 6 remaining days that make up the full Diploma programme.
- Practical: Skeletal Review
- Practical: Pre-Event Sports Massage Approaches
- Video: Sample Techniques
- Practical: Effleurage and Petrissage – Upper body
- Muscles: Positions and Actions
- NMT and TP’s
- Practical: TP’s and NMT Approaches
- MET: RI, PIR AND CRAC
- Practical: MET - RI and PIR
Students can choose to progress and complete a further 6 days to achieve the full: ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage
 Tutor: Marvin Dukes. Marvin spent two years in Fitness Management before setting up his Personal Training Company, M.D. Training in 2002. In 2004 Marvin moved into the Sports Massage Therapy field and began to specialise more in Sports Injuries & Rehabilitation.
Marvin has worked as Head Therapist to Birmingham City FC youth development programme as well as teaching Sports Injuries at Birmingham College. Marvin has worked as Head Therapist in Semi-pro football since 2006 and currently works with AFC Wombourne Utd. He teaches Sports Massage for Active Health Group who are based in Manchester and is a Fitness Consultant for PTH, Performance Through Health, an Occupational Health Company in Bromsgrove. Marvin re-launched his business as Walsall Injury Clinic in 2008 and now purely focusing on Injury Treatment, Management & Rehabilitation.
